But a while ago, I started daydreaming about making a very small batch of ravioli. Something manageable and fun and even a little zen rather than a marathon all-day affair with flour everywhere and pasta drying on every flat surface. I imagined tender little pasta pillows with a really savory filling and a simple sauce. I pictured myself rolling out a small sheet of pasta dough with my rolling pin.?No pasta maker required?was a must in this fantasy, since I gave my pasta maker away years ago to a friend ? may she get more use out of it than I ever did!

I continued the scenario in my mind with two artfully arranged plates, music in the background, and candles on the table.

In support of this fantasy, I ordered a ravioli cutter from Amazon.

Then I made a batch of rich homemade?ricotta cheese.

It was go-time.

Ricotta and wild mushroom ravioli
Serves 4?

Dough:
1-1/2 cups flour (plus more as needed)
1 egg
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water

Filling:
1 cup fresh, whole-milk ricotta
1/2 cup chopped wild mushrooms (reconstituted dried mushrooms work fine)

To make the dough:

Mound the flour on a work surface and sprinkle with the salt. Make a deep well in center of flour. Pour oil into well and crack the egg into it. Use a fork to gently mix the egg and oil together, then gradually incorporate surrounding flour a little at a time. As egg mixture absorbs flour, add water one tablespoon at a time, just until the dough becomes wet and sticky. Generously sprinkle the dough and work surface with additional flour. Knead the dough, adding flour as necessary to prevent sticking, until it?s elastic and smooth, about five minutes. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and set aside to let rest for half an hour.

To make the ravioli:

If you have a pasta maker, use it for this step. If not: divide dough in half and work with one half at a time. On a well-floured piece of parchment paper, use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a large oval, as thin as you can get it (about 1/16 inch thick).

Spread a generous layer of ricotta cheese over half of the pasta oval, leaving about a 1/4 inch margin. Sprinkle with wild mushrooms. Fold dough over filling.

Pressing firmly, run ravioli cutter around outside edge of entire half oval of dough. This will crimp edges together and cut off a narrow strip of dough. Run ravioli cutter the length of the dough packet, in about 1 inch strips, then repeat in the other direction. This will crimp and cut your ravioli into squares.

?Repeat with second half of dough.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully add ravioli, then cook, uncovered, at a gentle simmer for about 8 minutes. Pull out a ravioli and test.? If it tastes tender, cooked, and not doughy, the ravioli are done. Turn off heat and remove ravioli with a slotted spoon, rather than dumping into a colander.

Top with sauce (this?pesto?is a great choice) and eat. Leftovers will keep well for lunch the next day.

What I've Learned So Far, Part 1

In the past few months, what I?ve learned so far about myself through online marketing is the possibilities are endless. The affiliate, article, and internet businesses are all huge potential income avenues that are filled with additional revenue streams that I have yet to uncover.

My learning curve is steep but not impossible to conquer.

This journey is never boring and is always challenging. I think my blood would stop coursing through its veins, if I didn?t challenge myself to seek out new mountains to conquer. It?s been one heck of a roller coaster ride, to say the least!

The Party?s Not Over Yet

I?ve just begun to tap into the never ending potential of these three income streams and I don?t intend on stopping until I?ve mastered them. That?s my tentative plan, anyway.

The internet has leveled the playing field for everyday people like myself to earn a living online.

I don?t want to give the impression that this ride is completely free of cost. If you find ANYONE offering to teach you how to start a business with no money down, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can!

The saying, ?It takes money to make money?, is so true.

I?ve had to make small investments in time and money I hope will reap benefits in the long run. I don't regret it, though. Compared to the cost of attending a college or university for one semester, what I?ve invested so far is miniscule.

Which is a good thing because I?ve learned I?m not cut out to work for someone else year in and year out.

Unlike my Dad, who was employed for almost 30 years for the same company, the thought of doing that breaks me out in hives.

One painful experience I?ve learned is to always backup the content of my site. A week ago, I accidentally deleted it and the few articles and videos I posted are gone (Ay, Chihuahua!). I could just kick myself for not backing up my site.

But lesson learned. As soon as I complete a project I?m working on, I?ll continue rebuilding it better than ever.

On Writing

It's something I?ve always enjoyed. Although, I never thought I could write full time and I never imagined there was any possibility of making money doing something I enjoy.

Many types of genres, topics, and tools to get my writing juices flowing interest me.

But keeping a journal has been one of the primary ways I?ve used to record the events of my life and it really sparked my renewed interest in composition in the past couple of years.

It never felt like a chore because I was pouring my heart onto paper. In good times or in bad, keeping a journal is therapeutic for me and helps me to process my feelings and emotions.

What I?ve learned from expressing myself in a diary is I have a little skill that?s slowly developing in positive ways. This skill has been transferred to other content creation sites that like my body of work enough to publish it. And yes, I?m pleasantly surprised by that discovery!

Don?t misunderstand me.

I?m not trying to pass myself off as the next Maya Angelou or Toni Morrison. Nor do I even consider myself a writer, much less a published author, it?s just what I like to do.

With practice, written communication is something I would love to continue to explore.

I hope you enjoyed reading part 1 of ?What I?ve Learned So Far?. Leave your comments below and tell me what you think about it.

Response to ?Adopt a Kid, Not a Cause? ? Together for Adoption

by Dennae Pierre Published Sep 28, 2012

As a foster and adoptive mother, I am always happy to come across articles on adoption. Megan Hill?s thoughts on whether or not adoption should be considered a cause communicated to me her ?desire for her children to know that they are loved and wanted by her. I can say a hearty ?amen? as an adoptive mother who never wants my children to think of themselves as a cause. There is much to agree with Megan, so?throughout this article I desire not to pit her ideas about adoption against ours, but rather show how her viewpoint scratches the surface and why Together for Adoption feels it is necessary to go deeper.

The Desire to Have Children

We have children because we want them. That is an easy way to describe the prospect by which people begin to have a family, but is it enough to stop there? As thoughtful Christians, we must ask ourselves, why do we want children?

The first few pages of the Bible show us that procreation is very much a part of God?s mission. God entrusted Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply and to fill the earth with image-bearers. These image-bearers were to spread the image of God all over the face of this earth. Why? Not to meet the instinctual need of Eve to nurture a child, although that was a result. It was not to secure Adam?s family line, although that happened as well. The primary reason was to spread God?s name throughout the earth.

From the beginning, there has always been something very missional about having children. We certainly don?t think God called our first parents to ?be fruitful and multiply? so they could ?rescue? a few children. This mission was broader, wider, and deeper.? Our children, biological or not, are part of the mission God entrusted to us.

What?s in a Name (?Adoption?)?

This is a piece of the backdrop that hangs behind the word ?Adoption? for us. When Together for Adoption speaks of ?Adoption? we are talking about something specific and distinct. We are not talking about adopting orphans. We do not believe that adoption is about embracing a diverse kingdom or fulfilling our duty to the needy. The word ?Adoption? in our name refers to the doctrine of adoption. We believe adoption is all about salvation. Adoption is a wonderful way to describe the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dan Cruver, the founder of Together for Adoption, says it wonderfully, ?I don?t know if you have ever thought about it like this, but God is an adoptive Father. Jesus, our Elder Brother, is God the Father?s eternal, only-begotten, natural Son. We believers are His sons through adoption. This identity is fundamental to who we are. As adopted sons, we enjoy all the rights and privileges of the relationship that God the Father enjoys with his eternal Son. To be God?s sons through adoption means that we are co-heirs with Jesus. This is an amazing reality and an eternal privilege! We will forever be God?s sons through the miracle of adoption.?

All of this, I am sure we agree on, but let me explain why this matters when it comes to orphan care. Of course families who adopt must want and love children, but much more is needed if we are to, on a macro level, meet the needs of the hundreds of millions of orphaned children and on a micro level, unselfishly love and care for the children in our individual homes in a way that provides answers and healing to their painful losses.

On a macro level, our message is not just for people who are currently involved in orphan care. It is necessary to remind the church of the doctrine of their adoption precisely to awaken their minds to the idea of loving some of the most vulnerable children in our world. We believe our message is necessary because the global orphan crisis is massive and unacceptable. 130+ million orphans will never get their physical and emotional needs met without the Church taking extreme action. What should motivate the Church to social action? Every single time, it needs to be the gospel. If we remove the gospel as the main motivation for the church to take action, we are left with individuals being motivated out of works righteousness.

What the Crisis Needs

The worldwide orphan crisis cannot be solved by Americans adopting children. Together for Adoption has not suggested that every Christian needs to ?adopt? children or even that every orphaned or vulnerable child needs to be adopted. Roughly 130,000 children?are adopted in the United States each year. That is a miniscule drop in the bucket of the 130 plus million children orphaned or at risk of being orphaned. Families ?wanting children? is necessary, but not enough to solve the world orphan crisis. We need a movement of believers who will not rest until the suffering cry of orphans is answered. If we want that type of movement to happen within the worldwide Church and to happen in a way that brings great glory to God, then it must be motivated out of the good and wonderful work Christ did for us, not from our own desires.

We need Christians in impoverished nations to care for orphans. We host our conferences in places like Haiti and Nicaragua because the only way many orphans will ever get their needs met is through an indigenous foster care and adoption movement. What will call, empower, and sustain a family already living in poverty to welcome that nephew or niece to their table? Only the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

We need Christians to work to prevent orphans. Systemic changes in the foster care system, addressing poverty, HIV/AIDS, and malaria, and finding creative ways to come around a single mom to truly be her family are a few of many the ways orphan prevention can happen. This can only happen in a way that brings glory to God and truly meets the needs of these individuals through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We need churches full of people who understand what it means to have been adopted into the family of God so that they support, encourage, and walk with families who adopt children. Adoptive moms often say that they do not feel understood or loved by their church members? callous or heartless comments in relation to their adopted children. The theology of adoption rightly taught and applied will create a Christian culture where that does not happen.

Those are just a few of the countless examples of why, on a macro level, our message is necessary. However, on a micro level, there are innumerable examples as well. As Megan Hill wrote in her blog post the adoption-blogging world well documents that adoption is not an easy task. It is well known that there are difficulties and pain involved. It should never be romanticized. I became involved with Together for Adoption after speaking to multiple couples who had decided to disrupt their foster care placements. Since then, I have spoken with families who have dissolved their adoptions. Many of the women I speak with are depressed and crushed under the weight of their children?s extreme needs.

Dissolution of adoption should never happen. Christians need to be equipped to endure with joy the suffering involved with a difficult foster care placement until that child can be reunited with their biological family or placed with a forever family. The theology of adoption can equip Christians to have a persevering love with difficult children who resist our love.

There is a great need for children to be adopted that are older or who have special needs. Many of us may be called to welcome in a teenager??at the cost of our own desires for healthy babies. The gospel, in particular the doctrine of adoption, equips Christians to make self-denying choices like these. It equips us to make these choices not as a part of a personal crusade to save the world one child at a time, but as a part of God?s mission to display his love and glory to everyone, especially the most vulnerable.

We must have a love that is so unique, so counter-cultural that we are able to love children that the world does not want, the kind of children that the world would deem undesirable and unlovable. This unique love can only come after drinking from the well of God?s love for his Son, which, by the wonderful grace of adoption, has been poured out to us.

Infertility and Adoption

Lastly, I would like to briefly speak to the infertility issue. Infertility is a great loss and terrible suffering for so many.? Anyone who has walked the painful road of infertility will tell you that adoption cannot solve that problem. Being able to adopt a child into your family is a blessing in and of itself. I have heard countless women express to me how thankful they are for their adoptive children and how they hope their child never thinks that they adopted them because they were infertile. As Megan Hill rightly says, we adopt our children because we want them, because we loved them. But it goes beyond that. We adopt them because they needed us and not because we need them.

Parenting never goes well with biological or adoptive children when we seek our children to meet a need within us. Rather, we make the sacrifices we do, joyfully, to raise our children out of an overflow of what God has done for us. Of course, we can agree that our children bless us. Children are a sanctifying grace from the Lord. Our children are a wonderful gift, but that gift must always remain in the place God intended it to be. A gift that points us to the wonderful gift giver who meets all our wants and desires with himself, our Father God.

Adopting simply to meet our own desire for a child also minimizes the pain and loss that child experiences. The loss of their biological family is a loss that happened only as a result of our broken and sinful world. How thankful I am to be my children?s mother. And yet, I weep every time I pray for their biological mother who is unable to be their mama. I adopted my children to meet their deep, desperate need for a mother, which means they experienced a deep and painful loss. As their mother, I wish I could protect them from the pain of the loss of their biological family. I wish when we had our ?why?? discussions I could make it as simple as ?because I wanted children.? But that would not answer the hurting cry of their heart that knows this is not the way it was meant to be.

Instead, I give my children a larger story in which they can live in as I paint a picture for them of our God who deeply understands their loss. I show them our God who experienced even greater loss; the loss of his only begotten Son and that terrible and horrific loss was the greatest act of love this universe has ever known. It is the very loss that restored me into a relationship with God. The God who adopted me into his family through the sweet blood of Jesus is the same God that has filled me with a deep love for them.

Long Arm of the Law Reaches Out to Innocence of Muslims ...

last time the feds just wanted to talkNakoula Basseley Nakoula, better known as Sam Becile, the filmmaker behind Innocence of Muslims, an anti-Islamic film that sparked protests throughout the Muslim world, was taken into federal custody, likely for violating a probation that includes a prohibition on internet use. Federal authorities began to review Nakoula?s probation days after the protests started, bringing him in to talk and even opened an investigation into the film. While he was convicted of credit-card fraud and identity theft, Nakoula was likely also an FBI informant (the feds tend to have quite a few). While Nakoula may seem an unsavory criminal type, the average American could commit as many as three felonies a day, bringing everyone within convenient reach of the law. Anti-anti-Muslim protester Mona Eltahawy, meanwhile, mistook vandalizing private property for free speech and arrest for the former as censorship of the latter.

An important reminder about free speech, and on Reason TV, Remy imagines a world without YouTube, a conduit for Innocence of Muslims, and target of governments looking to look tough on blasphemy (or ?hate speech?):

Teen bitten by ?world?s most venomous snake?

A 17-year-old Australian boy is in serious condition after being bitten by what most reptile experts believe is the world's most venomous snake.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the boy was admitted to a hospital in the town of Kurri Kurri with a snakebite on his left hand. He was later transferred to Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle.

The snake, which was brought still alive to the hospital by the boy's friend, was identified as an inland taipan. The snake is native to western New South Wales?about 600 kilometers from where the boy was bitten.

A spokesman for the Taronga Zoo?in Sydney told the paper that a drop of the snake's venom "can kill 100 adult men and 250,000 mice."

[Related: Kids keep 2-headed snake as pet]

Julie Mendezona, head zookeeper at Australian Reptile Park, told the paper that reports of inland taipan bites are extremely rare, and that there have been about 100 in Australia's history. A bite will effectively "start shutting down the function of messages going to your brain, to your vital organs, your lungs and your heart and even your muscles," she said. "So, paralysis is usually what happens with the patient. Because it can act so fast, being a neurotoxin, that's what makes it such a deadly animal. It can kill someone within maybe 45 minutes. There have been reports of people experiencing effects of venom within half an hour as well.

"It also contains an anticoagulant," she added, "which means it will interfere with the blood clotting, so therefore you can experience bleeding out as well."

Barry Martin, a veteran snake catcher who was called in to identify the inland taipan, told the Daily Telegraph it's known as a "fierce snake."

"They [used to be] called the 'two-step snake' as in it bites you, you take two steps and you're dead," he said.

Personal Trainer Redondo Beach Tips - Health & Fitness Article ...

Before we actually talk about the information, it is essential to highlight the value of always speaking with a skilled Redondo Beach Personal Trainer before you believe something that another individual reveals about working out. There are many flaws that are made, several even by great sports athletes. The personal instructor always aware of what is most reliable as a part of his role is being updated with all the adjustments that occurred in the trade and supporting the customers.

Resistance Training Does Not Get You Ripped Alone

Some individuals previously discovered the truth that strength training will lose the most fat possible but this does not imply that you can just workout really hard and you?ll find yourself with 6 pack abs. The reality would be that your food consumption is the most important aspect of getting toned and not just your regular workout. Strength training really is the best choice in case you need to reduce weight as quickly as possible but the personal trainer in Redondo Beach will certainly offer you a nutrition routine that you have to follow.

Working Out Is Not About Quantity

Sad to say there are countless of people that basically exercise a lot. More workout is not always much better than less. The fact is that you need to train as much as it is required because too much work could result in the production of excessive cortisol. That is known as the stress hormone and this will literally break your body down. Every single resistance training routine that?s created by a personal trainer in Redondo Beach may last below 60 minutes with forty five minutes as the highest for almost all routines. It is always best to put an emphasis on excellence instead of amount and this is absolutely true for anything in life.

Age Is Not a Component That Determines Whether Or Not You Should Train

How often have you heard people expressing that they are too old to train? This is definitely not true and you could in fact exercise even if you are 90 if your system permits you to. In fact, working out has been proven to be really good for people that are older. Then again, as we grow older, there are limitations that appear. It?s important to talk with a personal trainer from Redondo Beach to be able to properly exercise and to get a routine that?s right for you.

Do not Blindly Trust Bodybuilders!

Individuals tend to believe something that a muscle builder tells them. This is such a negative approach due to the fact that those individuals are not always the best ones that you could talk to. A bodybuilder has a specific exercise method that?s working for him but might not be suitable in your situation. Only believe in what the Personal Trainer Redondo Beach is advising you because this qualified professional will take into consideration your system and your demands. The body builders tend to suggest training based on what is good for them and not for you.

Use These Personal Finance Tips To Get Ahead - Reach Your Goals

Does your own financial situation confuse you? Believe me, you are not alone. Even the most intelligent people can feel at a loss concerning financial matters because they are unaware of some basic information. This article is packed with some of the easiest and most effective ideas for taking and maintaining control of your personal finances.

Scams that promise to make you rich quick, should be avoided at all costs. This is one thing that happens to many marketers. The majority of your money should be spent making more money, not on learning how to make more money.

If you are spending your whole paycheck before you even get it, you should look for some places where you can save. If you try to cut an enjoyable activity, such as dining out, out of your budget entirely, you?ll probably give up on your budget after just a few months. But if you cut your restaurant expenses by half, you can still enjoy going out sometimes.

TIP! Make sure you have a secure way to dispose of documents that contain personal information. Buying a shredder is the most straightforward way to accomplish this.

When making investments, consider the long-term success of your stocks and don?t invest out of a sense of loyalty. If the company you have done well with in the past is now not doing so well, then it is wise to invest your money into something that is performing better.

Everyone needs a savings that is liquid. A high yielding bank account will fulfill this need. Many online banks are offering higher interest savings accounts to lure in new customers; just like ?regular? banks, they are FDIC insured.

Try working from home if you want to save money. With today?s high gas prices, commuting to work can cost a lot of money. Gas, lunches and parking fees can eat up a sizable part of your paycheck.

On the day before payday, put away a little bit of money and resolve to only spend that money over the weekend. Once you get paid, just let the money be direct deposited and don?t take any of it out. This will allow the money for bills to still be available on Monday.

TIP! Try better your credit score before buying a car or home. Think about taking out a small loan, paying it off quickly, or keep a low balance and make timely payments on a couple of credit cards.

Try finding the best local restaurants that the locals eat to find more authentic food and better prices in foreign countries. Restaurants in busy tourist areas tend to be the highest priced, so find out where the locals eat. This way, you can find good food at affordable prices.

Revisit your insurance coverage. You may find that you are paying too much for insurance! There may be cheaper alternatives out on the market that you can use or there might be unnecessary options that you?re paying for. Take these items out of your policy, and use the money somewhere else.

An old computer can used to gain additional money when trying to get a little extra to help your finances. You can sell a broken one, but if it?s working it will be worth more. Even if someone sells a broken laptop, it will probably at least cover gas for a car or something in the same price range.

TIP! Create and stick to a budget to replenish your finances. Whether you create a budget with computer software or write it down using a pen and paper, a budget can help you focus on your spending habits so you can adjust as necessary.

Stop using your credit card if you find that you are having problems making the payments. Cut down on your expenses in any way that you can, and use an alternative payment method, so you don?t end up reaching or overextending the limit on your credit card. Before you charge anything to your credit card, you should pay your balance in full.

Look for a credit card with interesting rewards. If you pay your balance off every month, this is good for you! Reward cards reward cardholders for their purchases by giving out cash and airline tickets, and other items. Carefully study different reward cards, and find the card that offers the best rewards.

In the final analysis, it seems that many people have great concerns about their finances. The problems they experience result in extreme financial hardship. But, you do not have to allow this to happen to you, now that you have read this article. Gain control of your finances by utilizing the above advice

Try to stay away from getting into debt when you can so your personal finances can benefit. While certain debts are unavoidable, like mortgages or college loans, toxic debts such as credit cards are best avoided at all costs. Borrowing less money translates into paying less money on surcharges and interest.

Mine the Hidden Job Market with LinkedIn | The Savvy Intern by ...

LinkedIn is more than an online resume. It is more than your modern-day Rolodex. It is a database of user-supplied information waiting for you to tap into it!

Where Are the Hidden Jobs?

You are looking for hidden jobs, which means they aren?t advertised. So how do you find them? You have to work this backwards. Who are the companies who could potentially hire you? Think about competitors, vendors, suppliers, and/or any other company that hires people to do what you want to do. This will require some research and this is where LinkedIn comes into play!

Search by Skills & Expertise

From the drop down menu ?More? select Skills & Expertise. Enter in a key word for your work/occupation.

In your results you will see LinkedIn profiles of people with this skill and on the side you will see other related skills. See what companies they work for. These are potential employers, or target companies. Also note on the right side of the screen the ?Related Companies? listed. Perhaps these are more targets. Go check them out.

And if you scroll to the bottom and you will notice recommended Groups on LinkedIn. If you are looking for industry groups to join, this could? be your ticket!

Search by Job Title

Use ?Advanced People Search? to search by Job Title. (Use the job titles you have found during your research.) You may want to start by filtering your search by ?current title only?. You can also filter your results by location. Take note of what companies these people work for and add those companies to your target list.

Searching Companies by Industry/Location Etc.

You can slide and dice a company search in many different ways:

  • Name
  • Location
  • Industry
  • Relationship (1st, 2nd, 3rd degree connections, or all LinkedIn members)
  • Size (number of employees)
  • Number of followers
  • Fortune 500 ranking

You may want to see who the employers are in your city. Or you may want to see where people you know work. Or you may know that you want to work for a small company. You can filter your search by one or many of these criteria to find potential employers (aka target companies).

Following Companies

You?ve developed a list of target companies. These are places you would like to work or at least you think you may. These are not necessarily companies that are posting jobs at this time. This list is any company that could potentially hire you because they have positions you could do!

With your list in hand, follow these companies!

Part of your regular routine is to monitor the updates of companies you are following. This is easily done by clicking on the ?company? tab on your home page of LinkedIn.

Now that you are following companies, LinkedIn is smart enough to suggest other companies you may want to follow. This is similar to the function you have seen with recommendations of people to connect with.

Company Research

See who you are connected to (or should be connected to) in the companies you are following. LinkedIn makes this easy to do. When you look at the company profile, it shows you who you are connected to who works there!

Check out the company?s tabs. They will have Employee Insights, and maybe even products/services and Careers tabs.

You can also see a list of companies viewed by other LinkedIn users. It says: ?viewers also viewed:? Chances are, the companies listed there are competitors or similar. See if you should add them to your growing target list! Then, follow them too! If you want to be extra sleuthy, you can see where employees used to work and where they went after. Again, more potential targets for you!

Now What?

Your mission now, should you choose to accept it is to make personal contact with people who work inside your target companies and schedule an informational meeting! You are seeking information about what is going on within the company. Your secondary mission is to get to know the person and have them get to know you so that when they have a job, you are the person they will call before it gets advertised!

Opportunities?Not Jobs

I have purposely NOT discussed the ?Job? search functionality within LinkedIn. Searching for posted jobs certainly is possible and something you can do on LinkedIn. I am pretty sure you can figure this out. Tapping into the hidden job market is a proactive approach to finding your next job. Give it a try! See what new companies you can add to your target list and begin following for potential opportunities!

Are there other tricks or creative ways you are harnessing the power and accessing the data from LinkedIn? Leave a comment! Inquiring minds want to know!

Eight-year-old girl battles ovarian cancer before ever hitting puberty ...

(NaturalNews) Ovarian cancer never used to be much of a threat to young girls, especially girls who have not yet hit puberty and whose ovaries are still developing. But today, an increasing number of adolescent girls, including eight-year-old Natalie Cosman of Manchester, Connecticut, face what doctors are now calling ovarian germ cell tumors, or tumors that spawn unexpectedly inside young girls' reproductive egg cells.

A recent ABC News report explains that in Natalie's case, the disease began manifesting itself in the form of persistent stomach pains, symptoms that her doctors routinely dismissed as nothing more than constipation or a stomach bug. But after a while, Natalie's pains grew so severe that her parents decided to take her to the emergency room, where an ultrasound revealed that the pains were the result of a small cyst in one of Natalie's ovaries.

The diagnosis came as a shock to Natalie's parents, who were under the impression that ovarian cancers primarily occur in older women. The National Cancer Institute (NCI), after all, estimates that as few as two percent of ovarian cancers occur in girls under the age of 20 -- and only a select few of these cases, if any, occur in girls that have not yet reached puberty. But this apparently is no longer the case.

"Especially girls who haven't had their period yet, nothing should grow on their ovary," said Dr. Judith Wolf, division chief of surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center near Houston, Texas, to ABC News.

Dr. Wolf is right, at least as far as traditional trends are concerned. But things appear to be changing, as more and more prepubescent females are developing inexplicable tumors in their reproductive organs that require aggressive surgeries and toxic chemotherapy to treat in accordance with Western medicine's guidelines for cancer treatment.

Young Sophie Fry from the U.K., also eight years old, had a similar experience with ovarian cancer that required her to undergo intense chemotherapy, as well as surgery to have her tumor and an ovary removed. Sophie is considered to be the youngest female ever in the U.K. to be stricken with this rare form of ovarian cancer. (http://www.mirror.co.uk)

Modern science claims it is unclear what causes ovarian germ cell tumors, and whether or not they are the result of genetic or environmental factors. However, elevating rates of the condition appear to directly correlate with the steady rise in the number of vaccines on the typical childhood vaccination schedule, the increased amount of hormones and antibiotics used in conventional foods, and the continued and growing use of untested genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply, all of which are linked to fertility problems and cancer.

Pre-K access is a challenge across the state | Bridge Michigan

By Ron French/Bridge Magazine

In theory, children from low- and moderate-income homes have an equal opportunity for free, high-quality preschool in every corner of Michigan. But it turns out some corners are more equal than others.

In Saginaw, 91 percent of 4-year-olds eligible for Great Start Readiness Program are in that state-funded preschool or another state- or federally funded classroom. But across the state in Allegan County, only 40 percent are in preschool.

A Bridge Magazine analysis of state and federal data revealed that your child?s chances of getting high-quality, free preschool depends on where you live. Statewide, 39 percent of children who meet the current eligibility guidelines are not enrolled in the program or any other taxpayer-supported preschool. But Bridge?s analysis found a large disparity in service to at-risk youths between regions, even though the state divvies up money to give every child a roughly equal shot at free preschool.

(Bridge map: See how well your county or region is meeting preschool needs.)

More money needs to be pumped into the system to assure that more kids have access to pre-K classes that give them a jump start on academic success. ?We can?t get to third-grade reading proficiency without it,? state schools Superintendent Mike Flanagan said this summer. ?You can?t get there. It?s impossible.?

The data raises questions not only about why the disparity exists, but the impact those forgotten 4-year-olds will have on their communities.

Getting to Great Start

The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is intended to provide free preschool for at-risk children who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Four-year-olds in families with household incomes below 300 percent of the federal poverty line ($69,150 for a family of four) can qualify for the program.

Getting your start

Michigan children are served by two main preschool programs: federally funded Head Start for families below the federal poverty line, and state-funded Great Start, for those living under 300 percent of the federal poverty level.

A family of four, for example, qualifies for Head Start with an annual household income below $23,050; Great Start, without conditions, below $46,100; and Great Start, with at least one at-risk factor for the child, below $69,150. (As many as 25 percent of enrolled students can be above the income levels, if other risk factors are present.)

The major risk factors are:

* Living in a high-poverty or high-crime neighborhood.

* Divorced parents, or a parent in the military, in prison or dead.

* Parent whose first child was born while they were a teenager.

* Parent who did not graduate high school.

* Chronic health issues or developmental disability.

* English is the second language.

* Documented abuse or neglect.

Complete guidelines can be found by clicking here.

Children who enroll in GSRP tend to be more ready for kindergarten, and, on average, do better throughout their academic careers than kids of similar economic background who didn?t attend.

GSRP kids have lower rates of grade retention and special education needs, which saves schools money. After graduation, they are more likely to hold jobs and to make more money, which is good for the local economy and for the state (through higher personal income and income taxes).

Could the GSRP enrollment gap revealed in Bridge?s analysis foretell the economic future of Michigan communities?

Concerned that 47 percent of eligible 4-year-olds are not enrolled in GSRP or any other state or federally funded preschool, Livingston County school and business leaders are beginning to search for their own solution, if the state doesn?t step to the plate soon.

?The state should have pre-K as part of its economic development plan for the whole state,? says Pat Convery, president of the Howell Chamber of Commerce. ?It?s a talent issue. We need to start at the beginning with kids.?

The problem with wait lists

Genesee County has ?huge wait lists? for GSRP classes, says Beth Hacket, of Genesee County Intermediate School District. ?We have too many eligible and too few slots. And preschool is so expensive (for families who don?t get slots), that some families will forgo it, and that further compromises the child?s education.?

Macomb County has the second-lowest percentage of eligible 4-year-olds in classrooms, with only 42 percent in Great Start or another program. Robert LeFevre, director of education policy for Macomb Intermediate School District, puts the blame squarely on state funding. (The state divvies up funds and tells providers how many GSRP slots they have.)

?I don?t know how to get more (slots),? says LeFevre. ?If we could get twice as many slots tomorrow, we?d fill them. If we could get triple as many slots, we?d fill them.?

Just north of Macomb, St. Clair County?s GSRP classes enroll only 46 percent of eligible 4-year-olds. Dan DeGrow, superintendent of the St. Clair County Regional Educational Service Agency and a former state senator, is a proponent of early childhood education, even offering St. Clair school districts a small subsidy if they provided transportation for GSRP students. But it?s difficult for cash-strapped schools to invest in a program that will only show tangible benefits years later.

?We?re like the Legislature ? we can?t think more than two years ahead,? said DeGrow. ?I get evaluated on our test scores on the front page every year. You say (pre-K) will show results in 10 years? That?s great. But I won?t be here.?

Children on waiting lists for GSRP account for only a fraction of Michigan?s forgotten 4-year-olds. Districts often struggle to find effective ways to inform low-income families of the program. Because the $3,400 schools get from the state for each GSRP student doesn?t cover the full costs of staffing and supplying the classrooms, schools don?t have any money to market the program.

And even if they did more to promote the preschool, there aren?t slots for additional kids.

Tracking down at-risk families, who tend to be move often, isn?t easy, says Larry Schweinhart, president of HighScope Educational Research Foundation. ?It?s not exactly like looking for a needle in a haystack,? he says, ?but it is like looking for 100 needles in a haystack.?

But providers could do more ? and probably would if there was adequate funding, explains Schweinhart.

?Providers will talk about serving the entire eligible population but they don?t mean it,? Schweinhart says. ?What they want to do is please the people who show up at their door.?

Allegan County struggles to find kids

To understand some of the frustrations faced by schools, look to Allegan County, along the shores of Lake Michigan. Already saddled with the lowest percentage of eligible 4-year-olds in classrooms, Allegan County has seen its GSRP enrollment drop again this fall. ?That is kind of unheard of and we?re struggling with the why,? says Erika Burkhardt, early childhood specialist for Allegan Educational Service Agency.

The half-day classes are a barrier to some working families, Burkhardt says. Transportation is less of an issue than it is in many counties, because most of the districts offer GSRP buses.

?We?ve filled our slots, it was harder this year,? says Burkhardt. ?For us, even getting the word out, the marketing is difficult. We have a high poverty rate, and very rural. To try to flush out those families is difficult, they?re out in the middle of nowhere.?

Allegan ESA has tried a little bit of everything to find at-risk 4-year-olds, from advertising at the start of children?s movies in theaters to yard signs advertising ?Free Preschool.?

?Our county?s not alone,? Burkhardt says. ?It?s difficult to reach families.?

Senior Writer Ron French joined Bridge in 2011 after having won more than 40 national and state journalism awards since he joined the Detroit News in 1995. French has a long track record of uncovering emerging issues and changing the public policy debate through his work. In 2006, he foretold the coming crisis in the auto industry in a special report detailing how worker health-care costs threatened to bankrupt General Motors.

It's time to break up the Euro - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blog ...

FORTUNE ? Roger Bootle prides himself on being something of a modern-day Nostradamus -- with good reason. In 1999 the British economist predicted a bursting of the dotcom bubble, and in his 2003 book, Money for Nothing, he forecast a worldwide crash in housing that would prove dire for the financial system. A rigorous student of markets, Bootle, 60, is a onetime Oxford don and chief economist for HSBC (HBC) who now runs Capital Economics, a London consulting firm. Operating out of a 19th-century Victorian townhouse near Buckingham Palace, the bald, bespectacled son of a civil servant confidently advises major banks and hedge funds from New York to Beijing. But away from the office he isn't much of a risk-taker. Bootle likes to unwind at England's famous Ascot Racecourse, where he wagers no more than "five or 10 quid just so I have a horse to cheer home."

Today Bootle is betting his professional reputation on another bold contrarian call, one with long-term ramifications for the world economy and global stock markets: He strongly believes that at least a partial breakup of the eurozone is inevitable and that massive changes are coming for the euro, the currency now shared by 17 nations accounting for one-eighth of world GDP.

In July, Bootle and his team won the prestigious Wolfson Economics Prize for providing the best answer to the following question: "If member states leave the Economic and Monetary Union, what is the best way for the economic process to be managed?" In a 114-page report, "Leaving the Euro: A Practical Guide," Bootle delivered a blueprint for the steps a nation should take in exiting the common currency. He also went further, summoning a powerful argument for why an exodus of weak countries is the only solution for Europe's deep malaise.

MORE: Two legendary economists square off over the euro

Bootle is not shy about championing his highly unpopular view. "The euro is a depression-making machine," he tells Fortune. "The politicians keep throwing money to support the weaker nations' debt problem. They never talk about restoring growth. Far from a disaster, a breakup of the euro is the only way to bring back growth and get Europe out of this mess. It can't happen soon enough."

Policymakers continue to take a diametrically opposite approach. Almost without exception, Europe's political leaders and regulators strongly back the euro's survival and generally claim that a breakup would bring economic Armageddon. Optimism that the eurozone will hold rose on Sept. 6, when Mario Draghi, chief of the European Central Bank, announced a giant program for purchasing the sovereign debt of weak eurozone nations. Draghi further stated that "the euro is irreversible." Then, on Sept. 12, a German court approved the country's participation in the European Stability Mechanism, a rescue fund with a lending capacity of $645 billion. Over five trading sessions, the S&P 500 jumped 2.4% in a potent relief rally.

In July, British economist Roger Bootle won a prize for a report offering a blueprint for how weaker countries should exit the euro.

In July, British economist Roger Bootle won a prize for a report offering a blueprint for how weaker countries should exit the euro.

But the continued bailouts are just buying time. Even economists who dread a euro breakup admit that it will probably happen eventually unless Germany and other healthy nations provide far greater support to their weak neighbors. "Europe needs to create federal-style debt shared by all the eurozone members," says Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis. "If that doesn't happen, the eurozone will probably dissolve."

The bet here is that Bootle is right and that the euro will fracture in the next few years. The result will be extremely messy in the immediate aftermath, bringing severe hardship to the exiting countries -- a rash of bankruptcies, giant defaults on sovereign debt, and temporary panic in world stock markets. But the pain that a breakup compresses into a one-time shock will happen anyway if weak nations remain in the euro. It will simply stretch over a number of years and turn out far worse. As Bootle argues, Europe must choose growth, and a split in the euro will bring it back with surprising speed. Let's use his report as a guide for how a successful breakup could play out.

The continent's weaker nations can't possibly solve their two big problems if they remain in the common currency. The first problem is the one the politicians and regulators talk about most: the huge overhang of sovereign debt, exceeding 100% of GDP in nations such as Greece and Italy. But the second is even more important. Europe's PIIGS -- Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain -- all suffer from a drastic loss of competitiveness because they face an excessive cost of production, especially compared with Germany. That disparity has decimated manufacturers in Spain and Italy struggling to compete with imports.

MORE:?The most powerful women in the global economy

The competitiveness gap was a decade in the making. Its main source is the shocking divergence in labor costs between Europe's two tiers, which we'll call the "core" and "peripheral" nations. From 1999 to 2011, unit labor costs -- the wages and benefits required to produce a car or computer -- rose 4.3% a year in Spain, 3.4% in Italy, and 4.1% in Ireland, compared with a 0.9% annual increase in Germany. That leaves the peripheral countries with a competitiveness gap of 30% to 40% vs. the core nations, by Bootle's estimate. As a result, Italy's exports as a share of the world total dropped from 5% in the late 1990s to about 2% last year.

If they remain in the euro, peripheral countries must solve their competitiveness problem through austerity -- by letting high unemployment grind down wages, by raising taxes, and by slashing government spending. "That process could take 10 years," says Bootle. Worse, their debt and interest payments would remain in euros and keep rising, while tax receipts fall. It would be nearly impossible for those nations to default on their debt and stay in the eurozone. "The ECB has been supporting the banks in weak countries," says Charles Goodhart of the London School of Economics. "The collateral is largely their sovereign bonds. If they default, all aid to the banks would cease, causing their collapse."

An immediate exit could solve both the debt and the competitiveness problems in a single stroke. Bootle believes it's likely that peripheral countries will begin to split off one by one. In his study, he concludes that although the legality of an exit is fuzzy, it can be justified under international law as essential to a country's economic survival. Nor would it require approval of Parliament prior to departure. That's important, given the need for secrecy.

Here's how the mechanics might work if, say, Spain decided to withdraw. The government would announce the decision on a Friday, shortly after the Prime Minister and cabinet reached the decision. It would state that by 12:01 a.m. Monday all wages, bank deposits, pensions, and prices would be reset in pesetas at a 1-to-1 ratio with the euro. Over the weekend, all ATMs and bank branches would be closed and no electronic transfers allowed, to prevent citizens from moving money to, say, Switzerland before the conversion. Bootle recommends that departing nations start printing notes and coins only after the announcement. In the interim all transactions would be via credit or prepaid cash cards. Euros would also be accepted for cash purposes for a fixed period. Starting on Monday morning, the euro would make its debut as a foreign currency. Its value would rise sharply against the new peseta. So a taxi fare priced at two pesetas might go for just one euro within days.

How about the debt issue? Bootle advises nations to re-denominate all sovereign bonds in local currency. The re-denomination really amounts to a default, since the foreign creditors would take big losses. Bootle advocates going further. He wants exiting nations to immediately cease all interest payments and demand a write-down bringing debt to a manageable 60% of GDP. Between the devaluation and the write-down, most creditors would lose 70% of the face value of the bonds. Bootle's argument is that their original value is a pure fiction anyway and a default of that magnitude is inevitable.

As for the private sector, Bootle recommends re-denominating loans to the stricken banks in the local currency. Otherwise, their capital, and all domestic lending, would evaporate. For corporations, loans would remain in euros. Naturally, a multitude of companies would be unable to service their debt with revenues in local currencies now worth far less in euros. This is perhaps the most difficult part of a euro exit. Bankruptcies would proliferate, and lenders would engage in negotiations for restructuring debt.

MORE: The world's largest economies by rank

Bootle doesn't foresee the core countries abandoning the euro. In fact, he predicts that Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and other Northern European nations will maintain the euro in their own single-currency zone -- an outcome that would be likely to cause the euro to strengthen over time against the dollar and the pound sterling.

An exit would bring a surge in inflation in newly departed countries as the cost of imports rose. Hence, wages would also rise, though less than prices because of the big pool of unemployed workers. As a result, Bootle calculates, a large drop in the value of the new currencies against the euro would be necessary: The Greek currency would need to fall 55%, those of Spain and Italy 40%, and the new Irish pound by 25%.

The departing nations would suffer several months of declining growth and rising unemployment. World stock markets would swoon. But just as occurred in Argentina after its currency was devalued a decade ago, the economies would start growing again within a year, driven by strength in exports. Germany would suffer from a far higher, properly valued currency that would hurt its exports. But it would also benefit from lower import prices and growing, rather than failing, neighbors to the south.

For Bootle, it's fundamental economics that will ultimately dictate the outcome. "I'm regarded as a pain in the neck and a party pooper," says Bootle. "But the truth is that the politicians have it totally wrong. They waffle and get lots of money from the public sector to buy time, but the markets win in the end." For Europe, abandoning the single currency is no longer an unthinkable choice, but the right choice.
