Cisco Live provided a unique opportunity to observe the latest trends and developments in unified communications (UC) products and technology. With regard to the OpenText Fax and Document Distribution Group (FDDG) portfolio, the show refreshed my insight into the ways in which people are still using fax, and provided an ideal forum to educate those who either do not use fax, or who simply do not understand the continuing relevance of the technology.
Our booth attracted a vast array of visitors including everyone from UC providers and integrators to business users, representing industries as diverse as banking, aviation, and government.? We also spoke with IT managers and technicians, some of whom questioned why exactly their business users were so protective of fax. I think most of them left with a better understanding of why fax use is still so prevalent, and why it will remain so for years to come.

RightFax Connect, one of OpenText?s most exciting new offerings, was of particular interest to the crowd. Our visitors were all too familiar with the challenges posed by providing telephony?not only for fax, but also for voice. Even today, delays of weeks and sometimes months for telcos to provide E1 or T1 lines are not uncommon. People were astounded by our ability to provide outbound faxing via our global telephony network. This was impressive in its own right, but jaws started to drop as we provisioned live inbound fax numbers in various countries within minutes. They watched on in disbelief as we started to send and receive faxes on a virtual RightFax server right there at the show.
Most of the people we spoke with have used RightFax. They were interested in the latest developments to the product, and we were happy to show them how RightFax has remained the world?s leading fax server by providing every integration imaginable. From a UC point of view, they were impressed with the extensive list of voice over IP (VoIP) systems we work with. Many were also planning to integrate multifunction printers into their business processes and were eager to learn how best to achieve this.

It became evident very quickly that almost everyone we spoke to came from businesses that continue to use fax in some form or another. While some have implemented fax servers or services, many still send faxes manually. All of them were asking for advice on how to improve their management of faxes, leading to a great number of discussions about integrations with UC and messaging platforms. Larger organizations in particular are interested in consolidation. They are keen to make better use of their existing infrastructures in an effort to provide a common set of services to their users that necessarily includes fax.
As companies are starting to adopt cloud solutions, many people were also interested to hear about our ability to host systems in one of our data centers, or to extend on-premise solutions with RightFax Connect. The most important takeaway for me was a reinforcement of the fact that whether users need an on-premise, cloud, or hybrid system, OpenText has a solution that fits the job.
