Antivirus Live CD/DVD/USB?s

Why Live CD/DVD/USB anti-virus environments?

Most modern malware once it infects an operating system such as Windows will typically disable any security software product(s) installed, rendering them useless. Live anti-virus environments run above any installed operating system thus preventing malware from activating and/or circumvent detection and the removal process. While do-it-yourself malware removal can work favorably in most situations, I highly recommend contacting your local professional computer repair service for major problems, if malware persists or not comfortable with resolving technical issues yourself.

NASA's SDO shows a little 'rain' on the sun

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Eruptive events on the sun can be wildly different. Some come just with a solar flare, some with an additional ejection of solar material called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and some with complex moving structures in association with changes in magnetic field lines that loop up into the sun's atmosphere, the corona.

On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced all three. A moderately powerful solar flare exploded on the sun's lower right limb, sending out light and radiation. Next came a CME, which shot off to the right out into space. And then, the sun treated viewers to one of its dazzling magnetic displays -- a phenomenon known as coronal rain.

Over the course of the next day, hot plasma in the corona cooled and condensed along strong magnetic fields in the region. Magnetic fields, themselves, are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, which highlights material at a temperature of about 50,000 Kelvin. This plasma acts as a tracer, helping scientists watch the dance of magnetic fields on the sun, outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface.

London regains crown as most expensive market for office space

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - London elbowed its way past Hong Kong to regain the title as the world's most expensive market in which to rent office space, while Rio de Janeiro jumped to the No. 3 spot from No. 8, according to a report by global real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield.

It was the first time since 2008 that London took the top spot. Competition for the scarce high quality office space in London fueled office rents by 2 percent in the city's West End bolstering rents sufficiently to leapfrog over Hong Kong, according to the report on Tuesday.

Office rents in the West End are expected to continue to grow as the economy improves, Cushman & Wakefield said.

At 2,137 euros S$3,600 per square meter, London's occupancy cost, which includes taxes and charges for cleaning and other services, are more than twice those of Paris, New York and Moscow.

Rounding out the top 10 most expensive office markets at the start of 2013 compared with 2012 were:

* No. 4 Connaught Place, New Delhi; up from No 5

* No. 5 Tokyo central business district, 5 Central Wards; down from No. 3

* No. 6 Moscow central business district; down from No. 4

* No. 7 Beijing central business district; down from No. 6

* No. 8 New York, Midtown, Madison and Fifth avenues; down from No. 7

* No. 9 Sydney central business district; unchanged

* No. 10 Paris central business district; unchanged

Mobli Adds Auto-Edit Feature, Location Filters, Social Sharing And Speed In New Version Of Media-Sharing App

MobliMobli is launching a new version of its photo- and video-sharing app, pushing into the next generation of this competitive space with a new feed of stories that’s integrated with Facebook and Tumblr, a new way to auto-edit uploaded photos, and filters specific to cities and other locations. Although it’s going up against competitors ranging from Instagram to Vine, the Israeli and New York company is in it for the long haul. It has previously raised $22 million, fielded some big acquisition offers (we hear), and added up 5 million registered (albeit not monthly) users. Mobli has been busy hiring lately, too, with the new?iOS app (iTunes link)?being an early result of its expansion. As I covered in my sneak peek last fall, the company has HTML5 for a native app due to performance limitations. If the Android (to be released in a month or so) will be anything like the iOS app, their money is being well spent on the device-first focus. Version 3.0 isn’t just marked by the native rewrite though. Mobli also packed the new version with a bunch of UX improvements. Here are all the new features Mobli 3.0 comes with: First off, the app is significantly faster and more responsive than previous versions ? immediately noticeable with the new redesigned main ‘feed’ screen. User-to-user messaging is now baked-in, saving users from having to jump over to Facebook to search and contact others. New Tumblr integration should also find welcome arms among users. Improvements to hashtag-suggestion and search have also been made. This brings us to where Mobli has always shone… filters and effects. To begin with, Mobli now has an ‘Auto-Filter’?feature that analyzes every photo’s colors, brightness, contrast, contents and composition, and applies the filter it feels is most suited for the image. Users can of course chose other filters (there are nine new ones) and effects, but the suggestion is a nice addition. This is on top of my favorite UX feature where instead of having to access the camera roll, the last three photos taken are offered on the bottom of the camera screen. Finally, with the new version Mobli also beefed-up event and location based filters. For example, Mobli can offer specific filters for Paris or New York City, while at the same time offering particular ones for venues such as the Louvre, or Madison Square Garden. Event-specific filters are relevant for

When Water Isn't Enough: The Lowdown on Sports Drinks ...

Everywhere you look these days, it seems that people are sweating out all sorts of different rainbow colors. We all feel like professional athletes: sports drinks in hand, ready for our gruelling workouts. But how much of it is science and how much of it is due to the placebo effect? Have you ever su ered from bloating after downing a bottle of the pixie water? Chances are you aren?t doing it right; sports drinks shouldn?t be considered in the same category as water (liquids), but should be viewed as nutrition. I?m going to play both the person asking the questions and the one answering them as well (because I?m unstable like that), to try and clarify the situation.

?

ISN?T WATER ENOUGH?

?

I?m glad you asked. Many different factors are in play when you put your body under strenuous exercise: you sweat (your body?s way of regularizing internal temperature), losing nutrients, which in turn has a negative effect on your energy. Water could be enough if your food intake was done properly?for example, if you eat a properly balanced meal/snack with carbs and proteins two hours before your one-hour-long workout, you?ll be fine; however, if you haven?t or if you plan on going longer than an hour, then you might need some-thing extra. Not only to give you more energy, fuel to burn, and focus, but also to help prevent lactic acid buildup and the ever-feared cramps.

?

WHAT ARE THE MAIN INGREDIENTS OF THESE DRINKS?

?

Funny, I was just about to talk about that. When browsing the aisles of the supermarket, what you need to look at is formulation. The most important ingredients are sodium and electrolytes (potassium; chloride, which helps retain fluid and replace lost nutrients; and carbohydrates, which will give your muscles the fuel they need for the extended effort).

?

SO THEN, ALL SPORT DRINKSARE THE SAME?

?

Don?t generalize, I was getting to that. There are three types of sports drinks that are being sold: There are isotonic drinks, which are designed to replace the loss of fluids and give a carbohydrate boost of about 5-8% in the solution. Hypotonic solutions usually have half the amount of carbohydrates and therefore promote water replacement with fewer calories and less energy. The third type is hypertonic drinks, with a higher than 10% carbohydrate rate.

?

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE THEM?

?

Hypotonic drinks are great for quick hydration before, during or after an e ort; however, they are not suitable to sustain a hard session of more than 45 minutes, since they are pretty close to simple water (ex: Light Water, PowerAde Zero ). Isotonic drinks are probably the most popular, and they are great to sustain e ort as they come with moderate carbohydrates, but they vary greatly in formula?some of them rely solely on simple carbs (sugar) which can be quite calorie heavy; you can also compare them to flavored and colored sugar water (Gatorade, Luzocade). Other solutions base their formula on complex carbs, and these are the ones I recommend the most, however they have to be bought in specialty stores (Hammer Heed). Hypertonic ones are quite useless during exercise (unless you are doing ultra-distances, Ironmans, marathons) as their carbohydrate structure does not get absorbed quickly, so they are best taken after exercise, to replenish muscle glycogen stores (fruit juices, sodas, Red Bull?). There are lots of specialty shakes and drinks for recovery and these are better for you than popping a soda. Regarding the quantity you need to take in, it all comes down to experience. You can figure out your sweat rate and then you?ll have an indication as to how many fluids you are losing, then, during training, test out different products and see how they act your body.

?

CAN I MAKE MY OWN?

?

Yes you can, and quite easily too. Just remember that while mak-ing your own sports drink is feasible, you need to do it carefully?in a way you gauge and calculate what you are putting in so that you know what category of drink you are making. Moreover, cer-tain nutrients and electrolytes are hard to come by, and you might miss out on adding them to your home brew.

Google-backed ride sharing start-up SideCar buys Heyride

18 Feb 2013

US ride-sharing startup SideCar, which is backed by venture heavyweights Lightspeed and Google Ventures, has purchased the assets of Heyride, an Austin-based ride-share company.

The deal extends the San Francisco-based SideCar?s reach. The company will begin rides in Philadelphia, Austin, and Los Angeles.

SideCar uses smartphones to connect drivers with a car with other nearby users in need of a ride. Riders place a pick-up and drop-off request on the app, which drivers can then accept. Once accepted, drivers can be viewed approaching in real time.

Riders can make a voluntary donation via the app, and members of the community can rate each other, ensuring the safest and best drivers are recognised while people with low ratings are removed.

The app is already popular in San Francisco and Seattle, with more than 100,000 connected rides.

Heyride was originally founded in 2012 because of the team?s frustration with limited transport options during the major local music SXSW festival.

Sunil Paul, CEO of SideCar, said, ?We?ve heard from people across the country and around the world that they want the SideCar community to take root in their cities and towns,

?Heyride?s talented team has developed a unique design and experience that will help take the rideshare movement we started here in San Francisco nationwide. We are thrilled to welcome Heyride to the SideCar family.?

SideCar?s backers include Google Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Spring Ventures, Huron River Ventures, SV Angel, and Lerer Ventures.
